When did your child stop eating baby food?

Hi! My 10 month old daughter will not eat her Level 2 foods anymore. I have been giving her more finger foods, and she loves trying new things! For about the last week, she will barely eat 1/2 a jar of veggies or the meat flavors. She will still eat the fruit jars, which I mix oatmeal into, but not the others. I started to give her Level 3 foods. She eats it, but I think she likes the finger foods better. When did you stop giving your kids baby foods? I think I will just give her what we eat, & if she does'nt like it, have some #3 jars on hand? Also, when did you do the switch to whole milk? I've already given my daughter foods with milk in it, (mashed pots & gravy, noodles, cheese, and yes, the occasional bite of ice cream) :) Right now I have not tried the whole milk yet though. What do you gals think? Is it too early for "real" foods & milk?

I don't think it's too early for real foods. As long as it's stuff she can't choke on. My boyfriend's parents still feed my daughter babyfood and she's 16 months old. It kinda drives me crazy but whatever! If she'd rather eat finger foods, i'd say feed her that! I started giving her half whole milk with half formula a little before she was 1 so right when she turned 1 I completely switched her.

By 10 months we were done with baby food except the fruits. She loved the 3rd food desserts so i still bought them for awhile. Do you have a pampered chef food chopper? Those are great for taking whatever table food you are having and chopping up so they can eat it. We didnt do whole milk until 18 months or so but that was due to an allergy, i hear lots of people start the switch around 10-11 months.

I have a 10 month old daughter too and we are having some similar issues. She won't eat any 3rd food...she gags on them every time I try. She also won't eat anything with meat in it. I keep trying to sneak it in, but she just isn't having it. She does like her finger foods and that chopper is a good idea...I will have to try that!
We went to the doctor about a month ago and I asked about milk. He said whenever I was ready to switch her, to go ahead. I have been changing it slowly...adding about an ounce of whole milk at a time. We are up to half and half now and she seems to be doing fine with it.

My ped told me to not even bother with any baby foods, just to mash up my own fruits, veggies, etc. So, I don't really use too much baby food. My daughter is 6 1/2 months and will eat just about anything - I stay away from high-allergy foods. When my son was little, he wouldn't even touch the 2nd and 3rd level foods. I think I switched him over to whole milk at 10 months b/c formula was getting too expensive (I'm kind of cheap). He has never had any problems with any types of allergies and he is now 3 1/2. He's also a very healthy kiddo. Good luck in your decision-making.

My daughter almost completely skipped baby food, she is almost 10months and eats all real food now, her doctor said whole milk is ok since she gets most of her calories from real food. Good luck!

I think it's fine to stop baby food if they are eating enough of the real food. Consider yourself lucky. I have a daycare boy who turned 1 last week and refuses real food. I've been trying for a month - chopped, mashed, you name it - I've tried it and he pushes it out of his mouth. I'm afraid he'll be eating baby food forever. So congrats if your baby has graduated into real food.

I never bothered with the stage 3 foods. There can be a lot of confusion with the stage 3 foods with the different textures. We just started chopping up whatever we were eating, as long as it was fairly soft. I never did the jarred meats, either - gross! I would never feed my baby something I wouldn't eat!

I know they look/smell gross, but my daughter gobbles up those meat sticks like it's going out of style! If she'll eat them-I'll feed them to her. Guess it's good she's getting meat.

I think we bought 2 jars of those disgusting sticks! Isabel ate them, but I couldn't get the stupid things out without them crumbling.

In my years of doing daycare, I would say the majority of parents don't even do level 3's, maybe some fruits, but they just skip to table food. As long as it's cut up well so she won't choke, and as long as she is getting enough, I would say go for it. Personally, I would hold off on the whole milk. I called my doc about switching Sadee over (or starting to...she is 11 months) and the nurse said he would talk to us about it at her 1 year checkup. So that was a big fat no from him. I trust him, though....he's been a great ped so far! I also have to add, I am jealous. Sadee won't eat any "real" veggies. She does great with fruits, toast, cereal, pizza0 and sometimes chicken (depends how hungry she is), but try to get her to eat a green bean and look out! She will eat veges in pureed form (we make our own baby food), but won't eat the chunks yet. She has texture issues and gags easily. Yesterday I chopped up spaghetti in the food processor, and she gagged on that and up came all the formula she had just drank. So we will just take it a day at a time for now. She isn't starving, I know that. Anyway, I would do like you said, give her what you are having (within reason....maybe not hot dogs or peanut butter sandwiches, or other common choking hazards) and have some "baby" food on hand if she doesn't eat what you are eating.

I think that is what I'll do. My little girl is growing up so fast! :( ha ha She used to be kinda "gaggy" too. A couple weeks ago, she gagged and threw up on the #3 foods, but now she can handle them. Keep trying with your little one! I gave her some ravioli for lunch. She would'nt pick it up and eat it, but she would gobble it off my fork!! She LOVED it! I just kinda woory about getting enough nutrients in her! She eats plenty though!

OK, I'm done! I tried to give Julia #3 chicken noodle food for supper, and she ate about 3 bites! That was her favorite #2 flavor! So, I got out the toddler lunchables (chicken fingers, graham sticks, and applessauce) and she ate all that I gave her! Oh well, she seems to know what she wants! Stubborn little stinker! (I wonder where she got that from)?! :)

Another thing with baby food is, it is much more bland than "people" food. So it seems like once they get a taste of the real thing, they don't go back to the boring stuff. Since we made our own baby food, there was very little water added, and if there was, it was water from steaming the fruits and veges, so it had flavor in it. When we travel, we try to give her the jarred stuff...she won't have anything to do with it. Tonight, I tried a grilled cheese sandwich, and she ate it. (In the past she has refused to eat it.) I also tried Gerber Graduates mac and cheese, chopped up with the PC chopper....GAG FEST! So she had applesauce and grilled cheese for dinner. Oh well, I am sure there are worse things I could have given her!

We just started our little guy on rice cereal. He just takes a little bit at a time a couple of times a day. He is just about 5 months old. How long did you all wait before adding actual baby food? What meal did you start with? We do it at supper time. He seems more receptive to the cereal at supper time than any other time. He likes his morning bottle way to much. Any tips on starting solids would be greatly appreciated.

I started with the 1's around 4mo, after he ate the rice cereal good. 6mo I went to 2's and oatmeal and 9mo to 3's. We started with sweet potatoes and it went great. I have heard it is better to start with a veggie so they don't get a sweet tooth! I didn't do the old thinking of "like colors" just wait about 3 days in between introducing new foods in case of an allergy. Just start with supper and when it seems like he's not full as long from the milk at lunch, try it then too. My son is 12 mo and we just started subbing food for brkfst instead of milk.

We started rice cereal at 5 months, then baby food (at 6 months. Sweet potatoes was her first. We made our own baby food, too, so we knew exactly what she was getting. We did it in the evening, and started on a weekend, in case it didn't agree with her and we were up all night!!! She never had a problem with anything though....except carrots. We had to mix those with something else, and she still won't eat them plain. (Actually, at 11 months, she won't eat ANY veges unless they are pureed! See my post above!) I also joined Gerber.com. They have suggestions/guidelines for feeding, and coupons too. I do know most recommend starting with orange veggies, then moving on to the green ones. Orange ones are a little sweeter. Then after they have veggies down, start with fruits. When she was about 8 months, we started feeding her "meals" (a fruit and veggie at lunch and dinner). My only regret....not starting meats sooner. She's not a big fan of those, either.

I started cereal at 5 months and dinner time was when we did it also, i was told at 5-6 months start veggies and 6-7 months start fruits and juices, if you start with fruit they may not take veggies as well. I mixed Sweet potatos with her cereal and she loved it but hated peas, LOL they look so gross. By 8 months she was eating 3 "meals" at day and bottles

We started rice cereal at 4 months and just started on level 1's last week. (Sophia will be six months next week) I had tried baby food about month ago with her but it didn't agree with her so I waited about three weeks and now everything's going fine. We started with sweet potatoes. I tried the green beans but she wasn't a bit fan of those at all. I found that she eats the baby food better if I add a little rice to it to thicken it up. With it being so runny it sometimes just starts running out of her mouth otherwise. We do rice and baby food at lunch, baby food for supper, and some rice before her bedtime nursing.

When it comes to feeding your child, my advice is this--

I am a food nazi. Isabel didn't get any fruits until she was eating all the veggies well. Then I'd let her have a fruit here and there. I'm glad I went that route, because now that she's 18 mos old, she'll eat a veggie like nobody's business. She eats a carb and a dairy for breakfast at daycare, carbs, veggies/fruit, dairy and protein for lunch at daycare, and a carb and dairy for snack at daycare. I figure she's had enough carbs/whole grains throughout her day from daycare, so for dinner she gets a protein, a big portion of veggies (sometimes fruit), and a dairy. My main goal for her diet is to make sure she gets her daily amount of fruits and vegetables. I don't think a veggetable lover is born--they're trained.

ETA: I've heard it takes about seven tries of a food before your child can actually decide they don't like it. Isabel eats everything but sweet potatoes. I've tried them many times and it's a no go.
