Smoking at the Zoo?

   Submitted by girls_mommy on May 19, 2008 - 2:13pm.

Has anyone noticed the amount of smoking taking place at the zoo? My family went on Saturday, and saw at least 7 different people smoking there. I finally asked a zoo employee if the zoo was still smoke-free, and she said yes, but 'we can't really control it'. I was digusted! Especially by 2 men smoking within feet of a very small baby monkey, not to mention the several children standing nearby.

is it complety smoke free? Last year when we went I remember seeing "smoking stations" around the zoo and it said you could smoke in those areas only. Has that changed?

I am pretty sure there was a big deal over it last year because it is unhealthy for the animals. The only smoking station is right by the entrance to the outside part of the zoo. I just wish the zoo would try harder to enforce it...like tell people when they pay it is entirely smoke-free. Maybe they don't know!

I didn't know it was smoke-free....obviously it isn't enforced. Nothing like a lungful of smoke when you're taking your kids to the zoo, huh?

EWWWWW I just cannot stand people who could care less who they smoke around!! I luckily havent noticed that at the zoo but im going to pay attention next time I go. My son has asthma so I go out of my way to make sure he doesnt have to breathe in smoke. This guy in my apt building always smoked in the stairwell and we would always happen to go down after him. It just seems that people who smoke could care less. The thing that really bugs me is when I am driving and see a mother in a mini van for example, driving kids around smoking. Seriously, do parents not care that they are letting their children breathe in toxic chemicals? If you want to kill yourself go ahead, but your children? I feel its almost attempted murder personally haha... i know , a little extreme, but seriously you are potentially setting your kids up for lung cancer or other cancers, asthma, whatever it may be, and those poor kids dont have a choice. OR, when i have been in a restaurant and parents walk in with little kids, and they're asked "smoking or non" and their like SMOKING! So its not only their smoke, but everybody elses going into their poor kids lungs too! GRRR sorry this is my biggest pet peeve seriously!! Same with what one of you said about kids cussing on the playground. I have NEVER said a swear word in front of my mom and I'm almost 30 haa... I guess its just out of respect, and my mom is the coolest mom ever, and my best friend, but just taught us not to swear.. not when she's not around thats a different story!! hehe

Actually this is interesting because I brought it up to one of my friends last time I took my kids to the zoo too! Even though it is outside, it should be smoke-free! The best is my kids have NO PROBLEM saying something within earshot of someone who is smoking about how bad it is and how nasty secondhand smoke is!

This makes me sad! We were going to take our kids to the zoo this summer, but I CAN'T STAND smoke. That's one thing I miss A LOT about Minnesota. I can't even stand going into some of the fun restaurants here, because they were so smoky the first time we went (Granite City and Cherry Creek Cafe, for example). I'm glad there are several smoke-free restaurants. I don't care if people smoke on their own turf, and I grew up in a town where everybody smoked and all the restaurants had smoking sections, but I got so spoiled by living in a "smoke free" community that I literally get sick to my stomach when I'm around it now.

I did not even know that it is now smoke free. I wish they would inforce it. I used to be a smoker, so I know how bad someone would want a smoke while hiking through the zoo with their family. However I have always felt that if I want to fill up my lungs with that crap fine, but I don't have a right to do it around others, especially where children are involved. Of course I am now one of those ex smokers that smokers love to hate, I cannot stand cigarrette smoke, it makes me so sick. I also think, hey, I made it through 8 hour shifts at work with 1 or maybe 2 smoke breaks, I can certainly make it through 2 hours at an event with my kids, or dinner with my friends. I could go on, but I'll try not to.

I can't wait until the State of SD catches up with the other states and goes smoke free! It was so nice going to a bowling alley in MN and not smelling of smoke!
Listen to your heart, it whispers softly so listen closely.

I agree; Ohio went totally smoke-free right before we moved and it was great. We could go anywhere we wanted with our kids and not have to worry about exposing them to smoke. My husband's entire family smoked (and wouldn't you know almost all of them quit after we moved? :-P ) and it really made them mad, but it was great for us. Like someone else said (twoathome, I think?) I don't mind if people smoke in their own home (as long as there are no children around), but in public is an entirely different matter.

I was at the zoo on Mother's Day, and someone was smoking near me - I wish I had realised it was smoke free, as I would have definitely said something. Chances are, the people smoking don't even know - doesn't excuse them for smoking around the kids and animals, but maybe if there were a few big signs around, they might get the message.

I can not STAND to be around smoke...I am allergic to it and I can't stand the way it makes me smell! I can't wait until SD catches up either! It really bothers me when people smoke around children as well...I can totally relate to wanting to say something to someone--we were at the park the other day and there was a group of people that came and were on the swings in their late teens/early 20s and were cussing up a storm...If I had heard 1 more cuss word I was going to say something to them.

I was just there Saturday to and ran into this same problem. There was a couple standing on one of the half sheltered viewing areas I think it was over by the cheetahs. My oldest son walked over there to look and I quick caught him and told him he couldn't go over there, he has asthma so bad I knew we would be in trouble if he did. When he asked me why the I just told him he couldn't be around the smoke and the lady called me a snooty b**ch I just calmy turned around and asked her if she would like to pay thousands of dollars on his hospital bill when he's admitted because he stopped breathing due to inhaling their 2nd hand smoke because that could have potentially happened. I really wanted to yell at her but I decided against it since my kids and my little brother were all right there. My little brother who is 10 looked at her and said "hey don't you talk to my sister that way"

I also cannot stand to be around smoke. I am allergic to it and my son has asthma. I also can't wait till SD catches up with the times and goes smoke free. If we go to an eating place that is really smokey and we are in the smoke free section -- when we get home the whole family takes a shower. The smell is so gross. I am a person who does tend to say something nicely when a person comes over and lights up next to my kids. I can't imagine a person swearing back at me in front of my kids. I think I would lose my temper. Swearing is another big no no especially when little ears are present. The other day so teens were playing in the park which is right out our backyard fence. They were swearing up a storm. I opened the gate to my fence and walke over to them and said please watch the kind of language you are using I have children playing outside. The teen girls looked at me like I was the devil. They ended up leaving. I think manners need to be taught in school because the lack of common courtesy does not exist.

My family and I were at the zoo yesterday. I could not believe how many people were smoking. Not only that but I could not believe how many pregnant women were smoking.
