New Aquatic Center

I know there was another post about the new aquatic center going up near Drake Springs. It looks like a fantastic place! However, I guess I wish it was an indoor facility. I LOVE the sun, but I think it would be so great to have a place like that for the winter months as well (since there are MANY more of those months here)! What do you think? I know it was put to a vote, but I'm curious as to what your thoughts are. Also, if they build something similar to that again or even another pool, where do you think it should be? I was somewhat surprised it is being built there (on 10th and Cliff), since so many other areas of town seem to be growing more. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

From what I understand I think it was built there, 10th and Cliff to replace Drake Springs as that pool was so old and outdated and was in dire need of repairs and replacing it was the logical answer, but I could be wrong. In the other post about the new pool someone stated that Kuehn was on the list to re-do next a few years back, so maybe that is a possibility...maybe that can be replaced with an indoor/outdoor combination pool, that would be wonderful and maybe something they are thinking of or is in the plans to be looked into next. I think that would be great to have an indoor public pool in the area. I wonder if other communities the size of ours with our weather have an indoor public pool? Maybe someone knows if that is something the city is considering for the future...

Just as a note, it was put to public vote whether to have the new Drake Springs facility be indoor or outdoor. Outdoor won with the majority vote.

In Utah, where I grew up, there were TONS of indoor pools. They were open after school let out for the day until 10pm on weeknights and from 11am-11pm on weekends. I would LOVE to see a public indoor pool, Tasha loves to go swimming but her meds make her very suceptible to heat stroke and sun exposure so I don't take her to the pools...I also think it would benefit those with toddlers as they tend to burn so easy. Unfortunately, they would have to build several or the one would be overrun with the noisy, arrogant, disrespectful teens that are everywhere you go these days!

The next pool that the City will replace is Spellerberg. The next new pool will be in the SW area of SF somewhere.
Many cities do have indoor pools/rec centers...including Luverne, Yankton, and I think Mitchell. There were just a select few that raised a big uproar about having Drake Springs outdoors (and only used 3 months if that...the pools close early because of staffing issues..kids go back to school). The vote failed for an indoor facility, so what's being built will be outdoor.

I understand and know it was put to vote and the outdoor pool won, as the op stated that as well, but hopefully in the future when a new pool is built or an old one replaced we can possibly have the chance at an indoor pool again at that time. How do you know the next pool the city will replace will be Spellerberg? Where did you get this information I am very curious to know? The person that stated in the other post about Kuehn being the next on the list before the Drake Springs issue came about said she used to be a lifegaurd and that was the plan back then. I don't understand why Spellerberg would be put in front of Kuehn if when they were talking about replacing a pool before that Spellerberg would jump ahead when that was not the plan then unless it is in more of a drastic need then Kuehn like Drake Springs was and I don't think that is the case. I think both Kuehn and Spellerberg could both use to be re-done, but Kuehn is far more in need than Spellerberg if a choice had to be made. I think the best option would be to build a new pool on the west side that has both indoor and outdoor so the area could be used all year...that would make the most sense.

I agree with you. When I lifeguarded for the city a number of years ago I worked at Kuehn pool, and they were hoping to build an aquatic center out there as well because there were so many days that we had to shut down because we were at capacity. I haven't worked there for a few years, so things may have changed but thats how it was back then :) I COMPLETELY agree with an indoor/outdoor facility. Sioux Center, IA has one of these and it has done fantastic. I also know of many people from Sioux Falls who drive down there to use this facility.

We have a season pass to the Sioux Center All Seasons Center and absolutely love it! We can play in their outside pool for awhile, then when everyone gets too hot, we move inside. It is a great place.

I actually have never been there. I lifeguarded in Sioux Center when the plans were in the works and saw all the plans and was able to give some input on that as well. My sister has been there a few times and everyone I have talked to has had wonderful things to say about it. I will have to take Kyli sometime when we go see Grandma Great

That sounds wonderful! I wonder who we contact to voice our opinions on this and suggest the indoor/outdoor facility for future consideration.

I would have liked to have seen it indoors as well, since there are already so many outdoor ones. Sheldon has a beautiful indoor aquatic center with an Olympic-sized swimming pool (literally, I'm not just exaggerating), a couple kid pools, a deep area with two diving boards, a giant hot-tub, and a large outdoor area with tables where you can lay out if you want. The whole town utilizes it for swimming lessons, swim-team meets, water aerobics, and fun. It's a wonderful facility. I'm surprised we don't have anything like that here in SF for the winter months that is open to the public. Some of the gyms have indoor pools (and of course hotels and apartment complexes), but not everybody can use those.

Check out siouxfalls.org/finance. There is a link to the City's 2009-2013 Capital Program. It will show all the improvements planned for the City in the next 5 years....including a new westside library, junior football complex, zoo improvements, fire stations, plus more. It's very interesting and exciting to see where the City will be going in the years to come.

Will this be broadcast on the CityLink channel just like any other City Council Meeting even though this is for the 2009-2013 Capital Program?

Yes, the public hearing is part of the regular Council meeting on July 21. It will be on CityLink just like all other council meetings.
