Im going to STI next year. They have night classes and you can get your LPN in about two years and the price is pretty reasonable.
Hi I go to school at National American University I take all my classes online and I have been going for little over a year and will have my 2 year degree in about 1 more year. I love it taking classes online allows me to do my homework and take my test when time allows for me so I normally do home after my daughter goes to bed or in the morning before she gets up or at nap time. I have never had any problems with doing it online and still finding lots of time for family. Also I was able to get aid through the school and grants and a scholorship to pay for school so I do not pay for anything right now and the school is really good about helping you figure out what help there is out there for you when it comes to paying for school. Pm me if you want to talk some more.
Hi! I have been going to school for awhile, 1st for business and then now LPN and I gruduate in December with my LPN degree. I am a single mom, and have one child. I go during the day and do not work. I get grants which cover most of school and then take out the rest of the student loans that Im offered and budget that through the months until i get my next check. I get foodstamps too to help out with food and JUST got approved for Housing after 2 1/2 years, and I get child support which helps. I usually do most of my homework after my son goes to bed, so I get to spend every evening and weekends with him. I also get child care assistance. Some people may look down on me because I get assistance, but there is no way that I could do it without it and even if I worked part time at nights and weekends I would never see my son, never get my homework and studying done and have to pay a babysitter at nights, plus lose benefits, so really makes no sense to me to keep working. I'll be off assistance when I get my degree though. But, I know a lot of moms that do go to school. My program is very difficult and I have clinicals 3 days a week so I keep pretty busy, but it'll be worth it!!

EASY money from home!
I dont look down on you at all, it is there for a reason. The way I look at, you are trying to better yourself by getting an education, not like you are sitting at home eating bon bons all day and taking advantage of the government. We no longer can get assistance. I just make roughly 100.00 over the limit for food stamps, they wont pay for daycare because my husband is getting a degree beyond a bachelors; so we do struggle each month, but only one more year left.
My husband and I both go to school fulltime. I am done with my bachelors in June and he is done next year at this time and will have a JD. I also work fulltime on top of going to school. It gets tough at times but it will be well worth it in the end and my daughter is still young enough that she probably wont even remember that we were both going to school. I try to do as many classes online as possible through CTU.
I say do it now before you will regret it. We both get plenty of loans and grants that help us out. We will have to pay them back, but hopefully at that point in our lives we will be able to afford to pay them back. Best of luck on your decisions.
That is so awesome that you are finishing your degree. Do not feel ashamed for using those programs, that is what they are in place for!
Listen to your heart, it whispers softly so listen closely.
You go, girl. Study after study has shown that women who get their degrees while they are on public assistance will MORE than "repay" whatever assistance they've used through taxes and increased productivity over the course of their career. I figure that these programs are like an "investment" for our society. If you can take the support that's available to you, and use it to improve your life, the life of your child, and, pretty soon, the lives of your patients, more power to you!
Ditto! Ditto!! Ditto!!!
There is nothing wrong with getting help! I have been going to Kilian for a year now. I work full time, go to school half time, and my daughter is in competitive cheerleading, tumbling, dance, and other things here and there. So if you ever need a little support let me know! I spend my time doing homework at her activities, and I make sure I attend all of them to support her! I also let her stay up until 10, and cuddle with her till she crashes, just to get those few extra moments together. Sometimes I stay up late doing homework, just depends on which class I am taking. Trust me, if you want it bad enough you will find the time to succeed!

I am 27, I go to school full time (Usually between 14-18 credits) But I make that work by going to school in the morning (9-12am) and 2 night classes (8 week classes...accellerated) Then I worked in the afternoon. I was home to make dinner each night, bathe my kids, help with homework and put them to bed. At one point i worked at a bar where I was able to go in after the kids went to bed...and was home before they woke. I went to school during that time also. I have 4 children who all have appointments, activities, school functions and so forth. The biggest thing is knowing you can do it...yes you WILL get frustrated and so on...but it will all eventually be worth it. Just know that you will deal with some rough patches but it will b e worth it because you are making a better future for you and your kid(s).
I take all online courses through the Univeristy of Phoenix. I work full time 8 - 5, spend the evenings with my kids and do homework after they go to bed each night. I love online classes, plus mine are accelerated and only 5 weeks long. So just when I think I can't take it anymore, I'm done with one class and on to the next. I really like it - but it is very expensive $1400 a class (so $1400 every 5 weeks). Luckily my employerer reimburses me so I won't actually pay it - can't imagine if I had to. I'll have my 4 year BS in Business next July.
I just graduated this past Saturday from National American University with a 2 yr degree in Business Administration. It took me 4 years to obtain it,but it was worth it. I would go 2 quarters then take a quarter off and so forth, that is why it took me so long to get my degree. You can do anything you set your mind too. What I did is I would work day shift and either take all my classes at night or online. That seemed to work out the best for me, becuase by the time I would get home anyways my son would already be sleeping. that is when I would do my online classes is at night when my son, and fiance were sleeping. Granted I didnt get much sleep the last few months with school work, home life, and work, but now that I am done, I will be able to enjoy my son, fiance, and life much more.
Thanks for all your input!!! I want to go to school for Radiation Therapy and the closest school for that is in Mitchell. So I would have to travel every day. It's for 12 months. You are unable to work when you are in this program. I'm just not sure where to look for assistance. I'll need something for assistance. My husband works full time, but we have a house and other bills to pay for along with daycare full-time. So do you know where I'd start looking for assistance???
Have you applied to the program yet? If not, I suggest doing it soon. I am from Mitchell and it always seems like the have a waiting list for the program. It is a great program, and you will have wonderful opportunities when you are done. They also have some great profs at MTI. One last thing, the drive isnt too bad; I drive it pretty frequently today being one of them.
I am 27 and a full time student at USF. It was the best decision I ever made to return to school. I am thankful my husband is so supportive and works his butt off to support us! It's been a monetary struggle, but we do just fine. My classes are day classes mostly, except this semester I had a couple night obligations. My son goes to daycare until about 3 each day and I spend the afternoon loving him up!
There are so many options, depending on where you want to go to school, so there are plenty of ways to make it work. And there are tons of scholarships, loans etc to help you financially. I would contact the schools financial aid office and talk to them about your options:)
I say more power to you! If it's something you really want, don't let the fact that you have children stand in your way!
To be honest I am a better student now than I was before having kids! Good luck to you:)

It took me about ten years to decide what I want to be when I grow up, and some days I'm still not really sure, but I went to Western Iowa Tech and got all of my generals out of the way (mostly online), and now I have transferred to SDSU and will start their Journalism program in the fall. I am sooooooooooo excited, because I finally get to start taking more of the Mass Com classes rather than just the basics. Once you fill out the FAFSA, you will find out how much money you can get for "free" (meaning grants). If you can't go for free, you are eligible for student loans. You usually get even more money than you need, from my understanding, but I personally just take out the exact amount I will need for that semester, even though it's tempting to go over. You could make it work because you don't have to start paying a dime until you graduate or quit school. Because my classes since having kids have been online, it's easy for me to juggle. Typically, I would hop on the computer for about half an hour while they slept during the day, and then would work on school from about 9-12 pm almost every night. I basically just had to give up television, and spending more time with my husband, but I believe in the long run it will definitely be worth it. I will graduate in approximately one year if all goes as planned. Going to campus classes (which I start this fall), will be a little more of a challenge, but I will be taking night classes and hopefully can make it work. Where there's a will there's a way, and I strongly encourage anyone thinking of starting college to do so. It will be an adjustment for sure, but it's possible!
My husband and I both attend CTU as we do part-time in house and on-line classes. We've both been there almost a year now and their night classes are wonderful. They allow us to be flexible with our schedules so we never have to worry about finding someone to watch our kids while the other is in class.
I just graduated last weekend from USD with a graduate degree. My son is 11 months old. I will say it wasn't always easy, but now that is done, I'm glad I did it. I went back to wallk graduation day, and there was no greater feeling than holding my son in my cap in gown that day. there was a lot of sacrifice from all of us, but I know that it was worth it. We are in over our heads in debt, but I also have a good job out of it and finally feel like we're getting ahead. I say go for it, but know that it will take work and sacrifice to get to the end. Good luck!!
I am currently going to STI for OB/GYN Ultrasound, and will graduate in July of 2010. It seems so far away! I am married and have a 17 month old daughter, and am trying very hard to keep her with people I know from church when I'm in class so that I don't have to pay for daycare even when she's not there or something...and I've scheduled my classes so that I'm home as much as possible. I've also scheduled my work so that I work overnights at the hospital, on the weekends. It's been interesting so far, but I love what I'm going to school for, and it will be worth it!!!
Good luck with DMS! I only went for a semester, but I couldn't handle it with being pregnant with my youngest and taking so much time away from my other 3 kiddos. Jo Ellen is tough but I she just wants you to do your best. I am kind of sad that I quit but I did what was best for me and my family. It makes it even harder that I should have been in clinicals now and done in July.

I'm a mom, I work full-time and I go to school full-time. I am a student at USD. The State schools have such an awesome program that allows anyone to take classes. You can have a "Home" school, mine is USD but take classes from any of the other state schools. You can actually go to class on your "home" school campus, or you can take classes online or through correspondance (this is what I do, 3 online and 2 correspondance) and you can take these courses from any of the schools so you have a lot of choice and options! I too worried how I would ever get my degree the traditional way, but I don't have to. It's such an awesome program and I love how easy they are to work with. PM me if you have any questions, I'd be glad to answer them!
Listen to your heart, it whispers softly so listen closely.
I too am a mom, work full time overnights, and go to school. I am a student of SDSU, but I attend South Dakota University Center in Sioux Falls. It can be stressful sometimes, but I know in the end it will be totally worth it!
I found out that I was pregnant with my son the day that I started the MBA program at USF. Throughout the course of the MBA I gave birth to 2 kids and lost my mother in law. I continued to work full time as did my husband. It was difficult at times but we made it through with lots of love and understanding and if I had to do it all over again I would. I would definitely recommend doing it while your kids are younger...seems like I was already sleep deprived from being a new mommy so a few extra hours of sleep deprivation to do homework just went along with the territory!

Wow... I've been toying with going back to school for a while now but honestly, I am scared. I was a good student in the past but it's been almost 10 years since I graduated from college. Can I do it??? But after reading the posts, I know that if I want to succeed at being a parent and a student I will. My DH works his tail off being the only provider and when the boys are in school I want to be able to help provide so that he can reach for his dreams... opening his own business. Sometimes getting started or making the first step toward change is the hardest... that's where I am now!
SAHM to 3 Boys!
It was about ten years between college and when i went and got my Masters, it wasn't a walk in the park, but it wasnt too hard. So many things came back once i got going and i really enjoyed it and i think my daughter got alot out of it also. She saw me studying and know that when i was done i got a better job. So i say GO FOR IT!!!!

Just curious how many moms there are that go to school!!
I would love to go back to school, but I don't know how I would make it financially. Would I be able to spend ample time with my child? Tell me how you juggle this situation. Thanks:)
