Anniversary party???

   Submitted by happymommy on July 14, 2008 - 3:26pm.

My husband and I decided we want to have an anniversary party for our tenth anniversary. Looking at wedding pics, everyone looks so sad as it was only a few months after my father died. We went to a wedding/reception last week and we both commented on how much fun it was and we'd wished our wedding was like that. We want to have a cocktail party, buffet and dance with a DJ. Does anyone have any recommendations for a reception hall and caterer? DJ?

Thanks for the tips! I really appreciate it!

I will tell you to NOT use the Ramada on West adn Russel. I don't know how big of a venue you need, but we had our wedding reception there...BIG mistake. I won't go on and on about everything they did wrong, but it made for an unhappy new bride. You can try CJ Callaways...they have a very nice banquet room, and different options for buffets, too. We loved our DJ, though...WOW Entertainment. They did a great job. As far as catering goes, it depends on what you are looking for. HyVee does a good job with their chicken, and I am sure they have other options as well. We have also had reunions catered by the Keg....their chicken is delicious.

Thanks Steph! I love the Keg. I was considering the Ramada Inn though so that's good to know. We were thinking chicken and sides and a dessert nothing too spectacular but ya know better than cocktail sandwiches. :) Of course for the party it's all about the DJ so I really want to get a great one.

When is this event? If you want a good DJ, I would start calling and get one booked now.

Ugh, the Ramada....if you want details, let me know. They did make up for it (if you can call giving us a $50 gift certificate to their crappy Castaways "making up for it"), but when I think back to my wedding night and the next day, I am very bitter.

But the rest of my wedding day was perfect, so that's what I focus on.

My cousin had his wedding reception out of town, at some hall. There is also the Fraternal Order of Police hall somewhere east of town, too. I don't know what these places charge, though.

Eh, I hate Castaways, I got sick there and they really don't have a great selection. We still have over a year so not in a big hurry but I would like to get an idea on who the best vendors in this area are. We are considering doing it in Sioux City since that's where our family is, but SF is so much cleaner!!! :)

I should preface this by stating that this was 7 years ago :).....We had our wedding reception at the Lakota Events Hall located just outside of Tea.(It's not much to look at...but by the time we finished decorating it worked out great) We had Valentinos cater it with lots of pastas and salads and were able to bring in all of our own alcohol. It was a very economical choice for us and everyone had a great time!

We did the Lakota Events as well. Like queen stated it is not much to look at, but after some decorating it looked much better and worked out great. We had bob's chicken and side salads, picked up some sliced beef from renner corner, buns from Hyvee. We also bought the alcohol and had an open bar. This all added to be cheaper than a hotel for us. Also, with hotels you have to use their food and can't bring a cater.

I would suggest the Fraternal Order of Police building or the Knights of Columbus Hall. That way you can bring in your own food and drinks.

Crooks has a nice Community Center that two of my friends have used for wedding receptions. They said it was VERY reasonably priced. A good caterer is Central Catering from Hawarden, IA. Reasonably priced and good food. http://www.centralcatering.net/

5 yrs ago we had central catering for our wedding! They did an awesome job..and sent extra food as well, for free. But hubby and I did feel bad for the 1 guy doing it ALL. It was hot out and he ran in and out sooo much! We gave him a nice tip..and told him he wasn't aloud to share it with anybody! lol (Just incase they have to split it)

Thanks for the info!!! I love Central Catering! MMM!
Those venues would be alot more affordable than the hotels and it'll be nice to not get stuck with using their own caterer. :) I wish I could start getting serious about planning but it's still SOOOO far away! Haha

It really means alot to me to be able to do this.

Well at least your husband wants to celebrate. We are celebrating our 19th wedding anniversary and my husband announced last night that he thinks we should get a new mattress for our bed for an anniversary gift. I nearly choked him! I guess after being married to him for 19 years, I shouldn't have expected much!

When I checked out reception halls for my wedding 4 yrs. ago, the FOP said that you would be personally held responsible for anyone drinking and driving from your party if you used their hall. (We were checking into having a keg)They said that the keg would have to stay outside also. We went with the Isaac Walton. I really liked it!

As a certified bartender I can assure you that this is true. You are personally responsible if you have a bar at any event, this is also true for bartenders serving paying customers...people have sued bartenders, bars, and people giving the party for accidents THEY caused, or were involved in, due to drinking and driving, falling down the stairs and many other accidents. This has always been a sore spot for me as I am not sure I should be held accountable for the jerk that comes in and orders 1 drink after he has been bar hopping all night, sometimes you can't tell right away that they have had too much when they come in but if you serve them that last drink you are liable.

It's just one more way for people to not take responsibility for themselves and pass the blame for their own stupidity if you ask me.

That is one of my pet peeves! Drives me nuts!

Thanks everyone! It's mostly family and aside from my younger sis no one really drinks MUCH! We will have a drink or two but thankfully no one in my family or Dan's has a drinking problem. As for friends, yeah there are a couple people I'd be a little concerned about. I really appreciate the info. I'm getting excited and it's still so far away. :) Our counseling really helped us alot. We've gotten through alot of hard times, we are really enjoying being parents and freaking out alot LESS! Thank God! So I really feel like we have some celebrating to do. :)
