The communtiy centers offer a variety of classes, supervised playgrounds, and just a fun place to hang out and play. My kids really like to play in the game room. Swimming, the pools are a great place to chill out. The library, whether you go to an event there or not, kids can still find an adventure in a great book. Plus the summer reading program has free Canary tickets, which is another fun thing to do. It is too late now but my kids have also participated in swimming lessons, vacation bible school, church camp, and they will go to lief erickson in a couple of weeks. Oh, and the outdoor campus has a variety of classes for no charge.
If all else fails, hook a sprinkler up to the water hose, they can make their own mud pit ;)
My older kids love to go bowling. You can easily spend a couple of hours bowling and my youngest even enjoyed going when she was 2. One of the only things I can take all 4 of my kids (ages 3-13) and they all enjoy.
Is there a roller skating rink in Sioux Falls? When we lived in Kansas City we went skating a lot over the summer. It was cheap, the kids had a great time, and it was nice and cool inside. Lots of moms were there too, so it was a good time for me as well.
One other thing I can mention is the movies. We went to the theater at I-29 and 26th St. (sorry new to town so I can't remember the name) on Monday to see WALL-E. Picked up a flyer there about movies they show over the summer...old kids movies. They play them on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 10AM and it only costs $1 to get in.
Hope this helps...if you're interested PM me and I'll give you the listings for the rest of the summer.
I don't know if you have availabilty to leave your home for field trips but if you do i know that Cici pizza and Hyvee Bakery do field trips for kids, Pizza Hut use to and they even got to make a pizza?? Inside the house, i found that kids around that age are starting to get into card games and even card tricks. You could get some books at the library and see if they can figure out some card tricks or even magic tricks?? You could also do some easy baking (cookies or decorated cupcakes) and science projects during naptime.
Thanks everyone for your help.I think I should be able to find some fun things to do now:)

I was just wondering if anyone knows of some fun activities for older kids to do during summer vacation. I run a in home daycare, but have only been doing it for less than a year. I dont have a problem finding thing for the young children, but I'm running out of fun things for the bigger kids(7 years-11years)
